In Refugees, Recent Migrants and Employment: Challenging Barriers and Exploring Pathways (ed., Routledge, Abingdon, 2009) Sonia McKay seeks to provide an in-depth and empirically-based analysis of the barriers experienced by refugees and recently arrived migrants in accessing employment commensurate with their qualifications, skills and experience, and how such barriers might be overcome.
The book is divided into three parts. Part I, on concepts and methodologies, explains that refugees and recent migrants are treated together in the book largely due to the commonality of their experiences when accessing employment in the destination country. It explores the concept of employability in the context of international migration; and examines the methodological challenges in researching the employment experiences of refugees and recent migrants, emphasizing the importance of a longitudinal approach that is able to assess their experiences over an extended period of time. Part II, on State policies in relation to migrants and refugees, discusses policies in the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, the United States, France and Canada through the prism of a number of different perspectives.
